Photography Author London

I’d like some advice for a visit to the Britain and Ireland for 4 to 6 weeks.?

I’m a middle aged woman, an artist and photographer, and want to come see where my family came from. I’m mostly Irish but had family members living in Britain as well. I’m looking for recommendations for finding a place or places to stay that would be affordable and allow me to go exploring. I know staying in London one wouldn’t want or need an auto. I’d like to see the countryside as well. (I’ve got my favorite British authors you see, so of course need to see the all the usual haunts I’ve only known in my mind). I know, it may sound foolish, but for me it would be like a trip to visit home – and I’d like some advice how to do it best, so I’d appreciate your considerate replies. I’m not stuffy and a sweet old lady, I’m kind of quirky, do abstract art and photography, teach private art lessons and also want to do the museums and contemporary art galleries as well. And of course a show or too in the East End. Any recommendations appreciated.

You are right about London. It’s not worth hiring a car. Incidentally, the theatres are in the West End!

Well done for wanting to explore outside London with a car. There are lots of rental companies. You should be able to arrange for a car before you leave USA. However, it’s easy enough to find reputable rental companies (Europcar, Enterprise, Hertz etc) when you are here.

Once you are free from public transport, you will be able to explore small market towns and villages. Have lunch in a country pub (they mostly provide excellent meals).

If you google “stay on a farm” you will find various links to Bed & Breakfast on real farms. They are huge value. You can enjoy a “Full English Breakfast”

As for authors, off the top of my head there is Jane Austen’s museum near Winchester. There is Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top in the Lake District.

have fun!
